If you have a classic car, or your current run around is starting to show its age then you might end up needing a coil spring compressor to help you repair it, as with most things there are lots of different types if you have a large vehicle then you will need to get some heavy duty spring compressors but if your car is small to average a normal set of compressors will do the job. There can be a lot of reasons springs on a car need replacing for example to pass the mot if they are not of a sufficient quality then the tester has to fail the whole car even if there is nothing else wrong with it. The quality of the roads can also affect how often the springs on a car need replacing.
Whether you do actually need a coil spring compressor is also debatable if you are only planning to do the job once then it is probably better to get a garage to do it not only will you save time but a lot of hassle if you’re not very mechanically minded because it can be a big job and requires a lot of parts to be taken off the car all in one go and it can be a bit daunting at first, make sure you have the right books and documentation so you have something to refer to as to where bits go and what types of parts you should be using.
It always helps if you have a friend to help you with the repair job and if you’re lucky they might even have a coil spring compressor you could borrow never attempt this job without one because the springs are highly compressed and it could result in a nasty accident. When you are shopping keep in mind the different types of compressors because there are also valve coil compressors these are not what you want because they are for the engine and help with the valves nothing to do with the suspension of the car at all, I might add an article on this in the future to help avoid any confusion.
Another thing to remember is setting the time aside to do the job, if you have work the next day you might want to wait until the weekend so you have a few days for any unforeseen problems there are normally at least a few with a job like this, also make sure you have all the parts you will need to replace after moving the springs because you will not have any form of transport to go and pick any up once your car is in pieces unless you have another one of course or a neighbour that will help you out otherwise you might have to wait for online delivery of the parts which is no good if you have work the next day. if half way through using your coil spring compressor to change the springs you realise the job is a bit beyond you it is probably a good idea to get some help rather than break anything or injure yourself trying to carry on so before starting make sure you read up all about what is necessary.
